Applying and obtaining the license
4-Step Process
In Texas, the credential for the practice of school psychology is the Licensed School Psychologist (LSP), which is granted by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (TSBEP).
Step 1
Pass the PRAXIS Exam
During the internship year, students sit for the PRAXIS, which is a national exam required for licensure in Texas and by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) for national certification.
Step 2
Pass Texas Jurisprudence Exam
No more than 6 months prior to submitting an application for licensure, students must pass the Texas jurisprudence exam. This exam is used to assess the candidate's knowledge of applicable laws governing the practice of psychology.
Step 3
Graduate
Upon successful completion of the required graduate course work and a 1,200 hour internship, all students are eligible for graduation with a master's in school psychology diploma.
Step 4
Apply for Licensure as a School Psychologist
After graduation, students apply to the Texas State Board of Examiner of Psychologists for a license to practice school psychology.
