Trinity Professor Amy Stone Shines Light on Hidden Realities of LGBTQ+ Homelessness with the San Antonio Current
Stone details the growing risks faced by vulnerable groups and the urgent need for targeted city action
In a recent study by Amy Stone, Ph.D., professor and chair of Trinity’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology, they found that roughly 28% of LGBTQ+ residents in the San Antonio area have experienced homelessness in their lifetimes, which is up from about 18% in 2020. Their research shows 6% were unhoused in the past year. Stone attributes the spike largely to family rejection, disproportionately impacting youth and Black, transgender, and non-binary individuals. The report calls on city leaders and service providers to treat LGBTQ+ homelessness as an urgent crisis requiring affirming housing, trained outreach, and family-support initiatives.
