In a retrospective San Antonio Express-News article, a sports historian tells about the ground-breaking career of Marilyn Montgomery Rindfuss ’57 as both a player and coach for Trinity University Women’s Tennis.
Rindfuss played for Trinity as a student from 1955 to 1957, and continued to play competitively until 1963. Rindfuss was ranked No. 1 among Texas women in 1961, won the National Hard Court Doubles Championship with Janet Hopps Adkisson in 1962, and was inducted into the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame the following year.
The article reports that Rindfuss ranked as high as No. 4 in doubles and No. 7 in singles by the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association during her professional career. She was invited three times to compete at Wimbledon, but declined due to her fear of flying, per the article.
Rindfuss took the position as head coach of the Trinity women’s team in 1976, leading them to win that year’s National Women’s Collegiate championship. You can read the Express-News article here.
