Student Opportunities

Trinity also offers private lessons in both instruments and voice to all students regardless of their majors. Lessons are taught by both full-time and part-time faculty. Some areas of study feature opportunities to perform at on and off-campus events.

Organ Study

Organ performance at Trinity is taught by David Heller, professor of music and University organist. Along with private lessons, students have opportunities to attend master classes, perform on and off campus, and participate in internships at local churches. From the Margarite B. Parker Chapel organ to organs in Germany and Mexico, organ study at Trinity leads to exceptional professional performance.

• Lessons for all students ranging from 45 to 60 minutes each week
• Weekly one-hour studio class
• Opportunities to perform on and off campus
• Full use of all practice facilities, including practice organs by Hofmann, Holtkamp, and Visser
• Lessons and performances given on the Hofmann/Ballard/Kegg organ in the Margarite B. Parker Chapel, the largest pipe organ in South Texas
• Teaching and practice privileges on the Wolff mechanical-action organ at Travis Park United Methodist Church in San Antonio
• Exposure to other fine instruments in the San Antonio area by Rosales, Sipe, Visser, and Austin/Kegg
• Participation in the Alamo Chapter of the American Guild of Organists
• Parker Chapel Recital Series-hosted yearly recitals and master classes by national and international artists, such as Gillian Weir, Michel Bouvard, Thomas Trotter, John Scott, Marie-Madeleine Duruflé, David Higgs, James David Christie, and Carole Terry
• Opportunities for employment and internships in local churches
   

Piano Study

As an All Steinway school, study at Trinity includes private lessons as well as opportunities to attend master classes, perform on and off campus, and participate in guest clinics and workshops. Weekly piano studio classes take place on a Steinway Concert Grand.

• Seminar courses include piano literature and piano pedagogy classes
• Many performance options and opportunities
• Many accompanying/collaborative opportunities: accompanying singers, performing chamber music, accompanying choirs, keyboard player for the Wind Ensemble or Orchestra
• Recitals, master classes, and/or workshops with guest pianists and clinicians
• MTNA chapter on campus
   

Vocal and Instrumental Study

Focused solely on the undergraduate music experience, study at Trinity includes individual instruction, personal attention, small classes, and solo performance opportunities.

• Small classes in pedagogy and literature
• Solo performance opportunities in studio recitals, solo recitals, the music department student recital
• Stieren Arts Enrichment Series: master classes, lectures, and coaching with international artists
• Musical productions and opera workshops with the music and theatre departments, including stage pit.

Today, cross-cultural understanding is as much a practical necessity as an educational standard. Study abroad is an embodiment of the liberal arts ideals and a sign of the initiative and breadth often looked for by employers.

From China to Austria, students perform around the world, fully immersing themselves in the very regions from which their music originates. Learning truly takes flight from notes on a page to the history and culture surrounding works of music.
