Experiential Learning
Internships
Many students work in paid summer internships or research projects. Students have done internships at USAA, Google, Microsoft, BJN Tech, Merge VR, Facebook, Valero, HEB, Rackspace, Spotify, GE, Chase, Amazon, and Activision, among others.
Senior Capstone Project
Students majoring in Computer Science complete a year-long project in their senior year of study. Many students complete their capstone through a year-long Senior Software Project for external clients, while others choose to complete a Senior Thesis instead.
Study Abroad
Today, cross-cultural understanding is as much a practical necessity as an educational standard. Study abroad is an embodiment of the liberal arts ideals and a sign of the initiative and breadth often looked for by employers.
Scholarships
Mach Research Fellowships
Mach fellowships, endowed by alumnus Steven Mach (Trinity 1992), provide funding to rising seniors in STEM fields for use in research or scholarly activity during their senior year. One Mach Fellow nomination is permitted per department, from which a University-wide committee makes final selections.
HEP Summer Research Fellowships
The Howland, Eggen, & Pitts Fellowship was established in 2011 by alumni and faculty of the department to honor retired faculty John Howland, Ph.D.; Maurice Eggen, Ph.D.; and Gerald Pitts, Ph.D. All three served the department ably for many years, and indeed Howland started the department (in 1970). The fund supports undergraduate student research.
Student Organizations
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
An on-campus student chapter of this organization sponsors campus lectures, service projects, field trips, and programming contests.
Trinity University Women in Computing (TUWIC)
Another dynamic student-run club, TUWIC provides support for students through workshops, networking, social events, and outreach.
Trinity Women In Science and Technology (TWIST)
TWIST sponsors a variety of educational, outreach, and social programs to promote the advancement of women in STEM fields.
Lecture Series and Events
Trinity’s computer science-related events include:
- A weekly colloquium featuring talks by faculty, students, and outside speakers
- An annual joint CSCI/PHIL picnic.
- An annual programming competition for high-school students
- ACM International Collegiate Programming regional competition
Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, where Trinity sends a number of female students.
Student Awards and Recognition
Every year, the Computer Science Department makes a number of awards to students.
Babbage-Lovelace Award
The Charles Babbage – Ada Lovelace Computing Award, named after the nineteenth-century researchers who developed the Difference and Analytic Engines and are hence the pioneers of the modern era of computing. is presented to a senior or seniors in recognition of superior achievement in academic and community computer-related activities;
Outstanding Senior and Junior Research Awards
These honors are given to recognize one or more seniors and juniors who have particularly distinguished records of Computer Science research.
