Among Trinity University's beautiful lawns and garden beds, there are invasive plants and plants that are not suited to the local climate. In addition, there are limited outdoor features that encourage students to interact in nature and socialize away from screens. This approach results in higher financial costs for the university, as poorly adapted plants require more water and must be replaced more often. These plants serve no pedagogical function in a learning setting and do not provide higher order foodweb services (e.g., pollinators). Finally, invasive species require more attention, reduce native biodiversity, and support industry standards that are insensitive to local needs. Therefore, we sought to understand how to improve the landscape in line with Trinity's environmental conditions and meet the needs of people who live and work on campus.
This summer, we collected density data to determine which plants were most common in Trinity's landscaping and whether substitutions are in order. We also created a Plant Material Standards detailing which plants best serve the University's goals and which plants should be avoided, with recommendations for replacement species. The Standards also provide information on each species and varietals with regards to planting and maintenance requirements and ecosystem services. Ultimately, we aim to support Trinity in its aspirations to reach its full potential as a beautiful, green campus that represents Place.
