Trinity University recognized Paul McGinlay and Andrew Tucker with the Helen Heare McKinley Employee Excellence Award at the annual State of the University meeting in May. The award, which includes a $750 prize, honors staff members whose work, often performed behind the scenes, demonstrates exceptional attitude, innovation, and work ethic while having a lasting impact on the university community.
Established by former student Helen H. McKinley, the award celebrates employees whose dedication and service help advance Trinity’s mission and values.
McGinlay, who is entering his 35th season as head coach of the Trinity Tigers men’s soccer program, was recognized for his extraordinary leadership and his lasting impact on generations of students. Since arriving at Trinity in 1991, he has built one of the nation’s premier NCAA Division III soccer programs, leading the Tigers to 23 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, 25 NCAA Tournament appearances, and the 2003 NCAA Division III National Championship.
While his athletic accomplishments are remarkable, colleagues say McGinlay’s greatest strength is his commitment to people. Known for maintaining close relationships with former players long after graduation, he has become a mentor, advocate, and source of support for countless students and colleagues across campus.
Colleagues praised McGinlay’s generosity, humility, and efforts to create a welcoming environment for all members of the Trinity community, including international students and staff.
Andrew Tucker, who’s served as the music department’s office manager since 2016, was honored for his exceptional service, professionalism, and compassion in supporting the department’s faculty, students, and guests.
Tucker oversees a wide range of responsibilities that are critical to the department’s daily operations, including faculty contracts, scheduling, travel coordination, event logistics, budgeting, technology support, and management of instruments and facilities. Faculty members noted that his organizational skills and reliability allow them to focus more fully on teaching and mentoring students.
In addition to managing the departmental budget, Tucker coordinates domestic and international travel opportunities for students and faculty, helping support projects and performances around the world.
Colleagues say what truly distinguishes Tucker is the care and kindness he brings to every interaction. Students describe him as patient, welcoming, and deeply invested in their success, while faculty members praised his calm leadership, generosity, and willingness to help solve problems both large and small.
