Trinity University English professor Kathryn Vomero Santos, Ph.D., was recently interviewed for the Folger Shakespeare Library’s “Shakespeare Unlimited” podcast. In the episode, Santos discussed the third volume of “The Bard in the Borderlands: An Anthology of Shakespeare Appropriations en La Frontera,” a book she edited with colleagues Katherine Gillen, professor of English at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, and Adrianna M. Santos, professor of English at Texas A&M University-San Antonio .
The anthology of plays includes works by Chicanx and Indigenous playwrights, according to the episode synopsis, each exploring the possibilities of retelling Shakespeare through the culture, language, and traditions of “la frontera,” or borderlands. Santos, Gillen, and contributing playwright Andrew Siañez-De La O talk about how these works draw on Mexican American and indigenous traditions.
The book was also selected to be highlighted in the first episode of “Uncovered” by PBS Books. It’s mentioned around minute 30 in the episode entitled “How a Bodega Becomes a Home.”
