Who We Are

The Student Managed Fund (SMF) gives selected Trinity University students the opportunity to manage real money in financial markets, bridging the gap between financial theory and real-world application. Founded in 1998 with a $500,000 allocation from the University's endowment, the SMF has grown to over $19 million under student management. From the outset, the program was designed to develop disciplined, long-term investors — not speculators — and that philosophy continues to guide every decision made by our student fund managers today.

A Legacy of Hands-On Investing

Since 1998, the Trinity University Student Managed Fund (SMF) has provided students with real-world investment experience. What began as a $500,000 allocation from the university’s endowment has grown to over $19 million by 2026—thanks to strategic fund management and additional endowment contributions.

Guided by Baker Duncan, former Chair of the Investment Committee, and Ronald Calgaard, then University President, the SMF was designed to teach students how to be successful, long-term investors—not speculators.

The Program

The SMF experience spans one academic year and consists of two upper-division Finance courses (Fall & Spring, 3 credit hours each). Students analyze existing investments, present buy/sell recommendations, and vote on portfolio decisions — gaining real-world experience in investment management, alumni networking, and national investment competitions.

Selection & Eligibility

Prospective fund managers must complete prerequisite Finance courses and participate in a competitive interview process. Selected students commit to the full academic year. Graduates leave with the financial expertise, leadership, and analytical skills sought by top firms in investment banking and asset management.
