Interested in working with the Writing Center? As a writing tutor, you will:

What Makes a Great Tutor

Successful writing tutors:

  • are flexible, friendly, and enthusiastic
  • have good people skills 
  • can work with writers at all levels, from those struggling with basic sentence structure to those needing help organizing complex seminar papers

The Center encourages students from all academic disciplines to apply.


When to Apply

You can submit an application at any point in the academic year. Even if no positions are open at the time of your application, your application will remain on file for future semesters. Second-semester freshmen are welcome to apply in advance for employment next fall.


Job Requirements

  1. Tutors must have completed their freshman year and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  2. Tutors must be able to commit to ten regular hours of tutoring per week. Hours must be flexible to ensure fairness to all employees.
  3. Tutors must attend and successfully complete a training workshop at the beginning of each semester of their employment.

Application Procedure

  1. Send a cover letter and resume or CV (as either Word or PDF documents) to @email.
  2. In your cover letter, please name at least one faculty reference who would be willing to attest to your writing ability and interpersonal skills. (Note: Faculty references do not need to write a letter on your behalf. They should just be willing to speak to your qualifications if asked.)
  3. In your cover letter, please detail your qualifications for the job based on the job descriptions and requirements.
