“[Spotlight] provides a platform for anyone and everyone to come showcase whatever talent they want to show. It can be dancing, singing, playing an instrument, stand-up comedy, rapping, slam poetry—literally anything. Spotlight is so popular because it provides a platform for anyone who wants to showcase their talent.” - 2016 Trinitonian
In 1958, Chi Beta Epsilon sponsored the first Sing Song in the Ruth Taylor Concert Hall. Participants, including Delta Kappa Phi, Sigma Theta Tau, the Spurs, and the Triniteers, presented three songs within a fifteen-minute time period—the Spurs took home the first-place trophy. Beginning in 1960, this spotlight on fraternities and sororities at Trinity became associated with Parents (now Family) Weekend, evolving into a highly anticipated University tradition.
To shift the focus from Greek life to individual student talents, the event was later reimagined as the “Best of Trinity Spotlight.” With this redirection, the event is now essentially a campus-wide talent show that features individual students; pairs, trios, and other combinations; and student organizations, such as the Trinitones a cappella group that won first place in 2016 for its Shrek medley.
“Personally, I love seeing my classmates perform because I am always taken aback by how well-rounded Trinity students are. Spotlight makes you realize that, hey, your Calc II peer tutor is not only amazing at math, but also a fantastic singer.” - 2016 Trinitonian
