Trinity teams excel across the NCAA landscape

In 2016, the Trinity Tigers defeated the Keystone Giants for the NCAA Division III baseball championship, marking the latest in a long line of victories for the school’s small but tenacious athletics program. Trinity has also excelled consistently in tennis, track, swimming, and diving, among other sports

Trinity’s powerhouse tennis program has proven especially dominant in nationwide sports. Trinity bagged the NITA Men's Tennis Indoor National Championship in 2015, marking the latest in a long line of victories. The tennis team, first formed in 1898, would go on to win nine national team championships in the coming century. The men’s team won the NCAA Division I championship in 1972, marking the first time a team other than the University of California at Los Angeles or the University of Southern California had won since 1959. The women’s team would go on to win USTA championships in 1973, 1975, and 1976 under the coaching of Marilyn Rindfuss.

Trinity’s individual tennis players have also earned their share of national and international championships. Since 1968, Trinity tennis players have won more than 20 NCAA, ITA, and USTA championships in singles and doubles tournaments. The University has also sent multiple players to Wimbledon, such as Chuck McKinley, who captured the men’s singles championship in 1963 without losing a set.

Trinity has also been bringing home medals in individual competitions like track since 1966, when Clyde Glosson won the NCAA D-II 100-yard dash. Glosson would go on to win the 200-yard dash in 1968 and enjoyed a brief NFL stint with the Buffalo Bills before entering a coaching career of his own. Trinity also collected a streak of wins in the 2000s for track, diving, and swimming. Christyn Schumann ’06 tacked on four more Trinity championships for high jump from 2004-2006, and Todd Wildman ’09, ’10 won the NCAA D-III indoor pentathlon in 2009 and 2010. Tigers racked up national championships for swimming in 2014 as well as diving in 2010 and 2012.

LeeRoy Tiger is Trinity's lovable mascot, spreading #TigerPride wherever he goes.
