Behind the Desk of an Educational Leadership Student
Jill Brady

Richard Perez is a current student at Trinity University’s Master of Educational Leadership Program. After teaching older elementary students for ten years, he decided he wanted to take on leadership roles through the administrative lens. We sat down with him to discuss his experience in the program.

Q. Tell me about your previous teaching experience.
A: I began my teaching journey at Loma Park Elementary in Edgewood ISD back in 2013. Shortly after, I was fortunate to teach at Salado Elementary within the ECISD, the same school I once attended as a student. I'm currently in my second year back in Edgewood teaching fifth grade math and science at Perales Elementary. Nine of my ten years teaching have been with fifth grade students.

Q: What influenced your decision to start a school leadership program?
A: I've served positions within schools that have allowed me to take on leadership roles from the perspective as a teacher, but I have yet experienced a role through the lens of an administrator. I was looking for a way to enhance my understanding of the leadership structures and systems that work in supporting schools and districts, something to support a well-balanced approach to my profession.

Q: Why did you choose Trinity?
A: Trinity is a phenomenal university with amazing opportunities. I'm glad to be part of the experience, and I look forward to continued success.

Q: What is your favorite part of the program?
A: Working with insightful professors, coaches, and a small cohort makes the program rewarding, while the internship opportunities are providing me the skills and knowledge to be successful. I enjoy being able to view our school with an administrative perspective.

Q: What aspect of the program is the most challenging for you?
A: Finding balance between teaching daily in the classroom, having a family with two young boys, graduate studies, and self-care is quite a challenge especially in an accelerated program. The mindset of progression and accomplishment helps keep me on track and able to overcome these challenges.

Q: How has this program helped your teaching so far?
A: This program is helping me become a better coach, mentor, and learner for myself and others. It also allows me to recognize high leverage strategies to support student learning objectives.

Q: Tell me about your future career plans.
A: I would like to be a science content instructional leader, coordinator or director for the elementary/primary level throughout a district.

Q: Do you have any advice for anyone considering Trinity's Masters of Educational Leadership program?
A: You can do this! Stay organized, stay ahead, and be open minded.
