Subject: Update and info from your faculty marshal

Dear Class of 2012,

I hope you had a great weekend and are continuing to make Trinity your new home.  I have enjoyed getting to know you and be with you during your first days at Trinity.  Last week you experienced what was likely an amazing, informative, fun, and perhaps sometimes information-overloaded new student orientation – we try to keep you active and expose you to a lot, and we also know that the orientation to Trinity must and will continue throughout the year as you experience many “firsts.”  I’ll try along with many others to help you see into the distance and to serve as your at-large advisor to anticipate things coming up.

This is an important week as you continue to attend classes – Thursday and Friday hopefully only served to whet your appetite.  This week you’ll continue attending those classes and maybe attend new classes, especially the one-day-only M/T/W classes.   I thought I’d remind you of a few important upcoming deadlines -- note that some of these can be found in the great Trinity Student Handbook & Planner as well as on the academic calendar that is on-line, in the course of study book, and in the class schedule.   (Note the planner also has lots of other info about Trinity events, religious observances, activities, etc.)

·         This is the week of add/drop.  The last day to add/drop via TigerPaws is FRIDAY.  This is the last day to register.  You’ll receive more info from the Registrar’s Office – always read their emails!

·         I would encourage you to talk with your advisor if you are thinking about adding/dropping but are not sure about the implications of those decisions.  Remember that you should be taking between 12-18 hours to be considered full-time, that you need an average of 15.5. hours per semester to graduate, that many advisors suggest between 13-15 hours your first semester, and that there is no substitute for talking to your advisor when making important scheduling and academic decisions.

·         After Friday, you can withdraw from a class, but as a reminder this will show up as a “W” on your transcript.  You can withdraw through October 21.  You must talk to your advisor and receive a signature on the withdrawal form before withdrawing.   Your advisor will help you think through withdrawing and will more than likely always encourage you to talk to the course professor first.

·         I noticed that the last day for textbook refunds with a receipt is Thursday!

·         Remember that one of the sage pieces of advice you received during NSO is to stay up on your  reading and course preparation.  It is easy to get behind quickly and then a small hill can turn into a mountain! Prep for each class meeting and you’ll be in good shape!

Please feel free to ask questions of your RM, Residential Life staff, faculty, advisors, and me – we all stand ready to help!  I’ll also use those questions to send out more info to your class – chances are if you have a question, others do too!

Best,
Dr. Breidenstein
